teeny weeny mouse

I was knitting a cat using Julie's pattern from Little Cotton Rabbits. For her boy animals I always love to knit up the dungarees and put something in the pockets like a teddy or a rabbit. As this project was a cat I thought a wee toy mouse would be a good idea. I couldn't find a small enough pattern so devised my own. Maybe someone else can make use of it!..........

Length of mouse – 1.5ins/3.5cms (excluding tail)

MATERIALS

four dpns size 2.25mm  (US 1)

4 ply/fingering white yarn

White kid silk yarn (optional)

4 ply/fingering pink yarn

small amount of toy stuffing

two pink seed beads

tapestry, darning and sewing needles

white sewing thread

for a fluffy mouse knit one strand of kid silk with one strand of 4 ply (this mouse will be slightly bigger)

BODY

Working from tail to nose.   

Cast on 12 sts in white yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Divide between three needles (4, 4, 4), join in the rd and place st marker.

Rds 1-9: k for 9 rds.

Rd 10: (k2, k2tog) rep 3 times  (9 sts).

Rd 11: k.

Rd 12: (k1, k2tog) rep 3 times  (6 sts).

Rd 13: (k2tog) rep 3 times  (3 sts).

Cut yarn, thread onto a tapestry needle and then through the 3 sts, pull tight and sew a few sts to secure. Lose yarn end inside body cavity.

EARS (make 2)                                                      

Make a loose slip knot with pink yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.

Row 1: kfb, then knit into front of the stitch again  ( 3 sts).

Cast off purlwise (wrong side). Leave a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail onto a needle and then thread yarn through the first st at the cast on edge. Then with the same yarn tail catch the st at the other cast off edge and pull it towards the first st at the cast on edge. There should be two yarn tails at the bottom edge of the ear ready to attach to the mouse body.

TO ASSEMBLE

Base of the mouse is in between two sets of decreases. This is important in order for the mouse to sit flat.

Attach ears to head at the beginning of the decreases.

Thread the two ear yarn tails of one ear through body/head and out the open cast on end. Tie the two yarn tails together and trim. It may help to roll the cast on edge of the body up to do this. Repeat for the second ear.

Insert a small amount of toy stuffing inside the body.

Then with the yarn tail from the cast on edge, catch the outer loop of each of the cast on stitches, pull tight to close gap and sew a few stitches to secure and loose yarn inside body.

With a darning needle and pink yarn make a few stitches at the tip of the nose.

With white sewing thread attach seed beads for eyes.

If you are not happy with the position of ears use the white sewing thread to sew the ears to the head.

Cut a length of approximately 6ins/15cms of pink yarn for tail. Attach to base of mouse with a few stitches. Make a knot at the other end and trim so that tail measure approximately 1.5ins/3cms.
